How to Easily Get Flat Lower Abs

Time and time again, I get contacted by frustrated trainees experiencing the same problem: Their upper abs are looking okay, but their lower abs are bulging out.  This is very typical, even for those who train hard and follow a sound diet.  There are three different causes of the lower ab bulge.  In order to flatten this region of your stomach, all three causes must be corrected.

The first reason the lower abs bulge out is caused by excess body fat.  The majority of individuals can lose their belly fat on the upper portion of their abs first.  On the other hand, the fat around their belly button would be burned last, only if these trainees got very lean.  This lower belly fat is only lost by engaging in a well-designed fat burning protocol.  This protocol would include a combonation of: metabolism raising resistance training, proper nutrition and high intensity cardio.

The second cause of the lower ab flab is directly related to the pelvic position.  If the pelvis is rotated forward, it will cause your lower spine to arch excessively.  This "over arch" causes your belly to bulge out even if your body fat levels are low.

In order to correct this problem, you must lengthen your hip flexors and strengthen your abdominals.  If this is done properly, you will realign your pevis and flatten your belly in no time.

Now I will give you instructions on how to perform a simple hip flexor stretch and describe a few different abdominal exercises.  Choose the ab exercise that is appropriate for your strength level.

Hip Flexor Stretch- Get into a lunge position.  Adjust the distance between your feet so when you squat down the shin on your front leg is in a vertical position.  You must maintain an upright torso.  Hold for one minute.  Repeat on the other leg.

Beginner Ab Exercise- Lie on your back on the floor.  Bend your knees to 90 degrees and place your feet flat on the floor.  With your palms down, place them under your lower back.  Lift both legs off the floor until your knees are pointing directly to the ceiling.  Roll your pelvis backward, thus creating slight pressure on your fingers.  This is the starting position.  Now lower both legs to the floor without arching your back and releasing any pressure off your hands.  To progress, simply straighten your legs several degrees each workout until you are performing this exercise with straight legs.

Level 2 Ab Exercise- Lie on your back.  Bend both knees and hips until they form ninety degree angles.  Bring knees toward chest by flexing your abdominal muscles while maintaining a constant knee angle. Return until hips and knees are again extended to 90 degree angles.  Repeat for the prescribed number of reps.

Advanced Ab Exercise- Lie on a decline bench.  Bend both knees and hips to 90 degree angles.  Lift knees toward chest by flexing abdominal muscles while maintaining a constant knee angle.  Now lower back down until hips and knees are again extended to 90 degree angles.  To progress, increase the angle of the decline.

The third reason for lower belly distension is abdominal bloating, which can be caused by two different problems.  The first is constipation.  If you are constipated, be sure to increase your water intake and check to see if you are getting enough dietary fiber (25-40 grams daily).  If those things are already in check, consult with your physician to achieve optimal bowel functioning.

The second cause of the distention is eating foods to which you are reactive.  When you eat foods that your body is sensitive to, your immune system will respond, which causes bloating in the abdominal area.  If you suspect this to be your culprit, pay close attention to how you feel after eating each meal.  Eliminate any foods that may cause you bloating, cramping, diarrhea or stomach discomfort.

But it gets even worse.

Cortisol also burns up lean muscle tissue.  Since lean muscle tissue is responsible for the speed of your metabolic rate, breaking muscle down makes losing belly fat nearly impossible. 

This explains why a person with high levels of cortisol would hold more fat in general.  But what is the specific connection with cortisol and BELLY fat? 

Well, abdominal fat has just about five times more cortisol receptors than body fat from anywhere else in the body.  Therefore, the higher your cortisol levels are, the more your body will need more receptors, thus prompting it to store more abdominal fat.

It is also speculated that once cortisol has bound itself to the receptors found on abdominal fat, it prevents that fat from releasing fatty acids to be burned as fuel, even during a fat burning workout. 

In other words, the fat that lands on your stomach is "stubborn", and doesn't want to leave.  It has a vested interest in keeping your stomach nice and plump! 

Alright, I hope that you are now convinced that keeping your cortisol levels in check is a big part of any successful fat loss program.  But how do we do that? 

Well, most supplement companies sell cortisol blockers.  The primary ingredient in these formulas is phosphatidylserine.  The bad news (and don't hold your breath waiting for these companies to admit it) is that these formulas do NOT work.  They are a total waste of your money so stay away from them.

The good news is that there are some simple things you can do to keep your cortisol at a level that won't cause any problems.  Here are some very valuable strategies:

1) Reduce stress (or at least don't sweat the small stuff) - I know that this is easier said than done.  But any attempt to deal with life's situations in a calm manner will make a difference.

2) Reduce alcohol use- Drinking booze will increase cortisol levels at a fast rate.  Can anyone say, "beer belly"?

3) Limit caffeine use- I know, I know...First no booze, and now no coffee!?!?  Look, I'm sorry to be the fun police, but you will need to ditch that latte if you are serious about losing belly fat.

4) Eat small meals throughout the day- Eating one or two big meals per day puts unnecessary stress on the body.  This too leads to increases in cortisol.

5) Lighten up! - Most people don't realize that laughter is one of the best remedies to lower your cortisol levels profoundly.  So laugh a little!

6) Don't overtrain- Yes, the very training you are doing to burn belly fat can actually be encouraging your body to store it.  Too much of a good thing is NOT a good thing!

Sit-Up Hold
Try this tummy exercise while you are lying on the floor. Get your feet flat on the floor by bending your knees and place your hands behind your head. Don’t put your elbows beside your head instead put them back apart where you can’t see them. Lift your shoulders from the floor utilizing the lower abdominals. Keep this pose for ten seconds. As this exercise decreases in difficulty, increase the amount of time you hold it. Make sure you aren’t lifting with your neck or arms but with the abdominals.

Lower Back Flatten

This involves the use of muscles you rarely activate which makes it tricky. This tummy exercise starts by kneeling or lying on your stomach. See which option (kneeling or lying) works best for you by trying both methods. The body should be as relaxed as possible, you will then attempt to pull your belly towards your spine utilizing just the muscles of the lower abdominals. Ten seconds is how long this should be held. Hold this position longer if it’s easy for you to achieve the ten seconds. You want to get the other muscles to work harder than the transverse abdominals or stop feeling the contraction before you release it. Release the contraction once you achieve this.

Toe Touching (Alternating)
This tummy exercise requires being flat on the floor. Using a towel or mat as a cushion for the spine while on the floor is easier. Put your feet up in the air while lying on the floor. Use the lower abdominals to lift the shoulders from the floor as you extend the right arm. Use your right hand to touch your left toes and then slowly lower yourself. Repeat the movement with the opposite arm. The space between your chest and chin should be maintained while the knees remain straight during the exercise.
